Pea Sprout

Pea Sprout POS is a restaurant point of sale system that was completely created from concept to execution with the idea that the POS would further add on necessary components as the business requires using ready built in products. It was designed with the premise that small restaurants have enough on their plate with expenses the POS system shouldn’t be one of them.

In researching POS start up systems we were amazed that the costs began from the $10,000 – $20,000 range, Pea Sprout wanted to keep things with a set monthly fee of $30-50. As your restaurant grows the fee would increase marginally with tables or customer needs.

The design of the Pea Sprout was simple and clean and we began by surveying waiters and waitress. We realized that the one goal was to keep the system intuitive, fast and as efficient as possible. This isn’t always the easiest task when the iOS devices offers so many nice transitions and animations. Though we wanted to use them sparingly and effectively we didn’t want to lose any of the patrons time entering in their order or pulling it up to retrieve the bill. The elements included in the screen appear only as they are necessary for each transition thus keeping the visual display sparse.

The next challenge was the design. The overall choice in color was simple and the background minimal and dark. Since the POS would be used 50% of the time at night we didn’t want it to draw any attention away from the servers or ambiance of the restaurant so it was designed with a black color scheme. We used bright blue for the tables that were in use and grey for the tables that were not in use. These types of visual cues were taken across the application to create a synergy and familiarity for the users to learn. Grey was was used as an item to select, blue was selected and then red was for cancel and green was to proceed and link back toward the logo of Pea Sprout being green.

In addition to the POS Ian McFadyen Design was also tasked with the website as well branding of Pea Sprout. A tech forward design was requested with the primary focus being friendly, professional and restaurant specific.
